PAW PRIDE

It was so much fun seeing so many familiar faces at the homecoming parade last night.
Tonight's the football game...Go Bulldogs!
Many of us sported our NEW school spirit jerseys today at school:

Let's stay healthy!

Today many of us got vaccinated for the upcoming flu season.
The health department came to school and gave students (and teachers) the flu mist (or flu shot).

Remember to also stay healthy this year by washing your hands, using Germ-X, getting a good night's sleep, and eating a healthy diet.

Here are some BrainPop video links about the flu and flu vaccines...

500 Box Tops (and earned Popsicles!)
Here are some Popsicle pictures...

AND then we collected a total of 1,000 Box Tops (and earned ice cream!)

The next level is 1,500...we'll earn popcorn!  Keep collecting those Box Tops!
(And remind your grandmas, neighbors, and everybody you know to save them for you too!)

Edmodo

Today in the take-home folder is a note from the office explaining about Edmodo.
You may have heard your child talking about this new online learning space we began using this week in small group reading.
We use this tool strictly for educational purposes and expect students to adhere to the guidelines we have discussed.
The link to the site is on the right side of the blog.

Social Studies

Geography, Prairie, Continents, Prime Meridian, renewable resources, latitude....
these are just some of the words you may have heard this week as we were busy reviewing for the chapter 2 social studies test.

Don't forget that the "social studies" tab at the top of the blog has a LOT of websites you can visit to help you with Daily Geography as well as practice other social studies topics.

Compasses

Starting tomorrow we will be using compasses in math class.

I have a class set for the students to use in the classroom; however, some of them are getting old and don't work as well as they used to work.

If you have a compass at home and would be willing to send it in to school, your child may use their own personal one.  (I'll teach them how to properly handle them tomorrow during math).

Also, if you have any compasses that you'd be willing to donate to the classroom, that would be much appreciated.
Thank you for all your support!

Student Council

Next week (Sept 17-20) is Student Council Election Week!

The student council is a group of students who are elected by their classmates to represent them (like a student government).  Members attend monthly business meetings where they discuss and plan activities, which improve our school and community.  It is a great way to meet other students while doing something worthwhile for your school.

We will have speeches on Wednesday, September 19.
We will vote on Thursday, September 20.

There is a stapled informational packet available to all students interested in running.  Please read over all the pages carefully.  Only decide to run if you are ready to work hard, attend all the meetings, and participate in all the activities.

We will elect 2 representatives from each fourth and fifth grade classroom.

For ideas for your poster, look at some of these:

After the monthly meetings you must report back to the class what happened.
Here are two sample videos of how you can report back to the class:

Polygons

What are the different types of polygons?

Have you read this book?  It's a terrific story about a triangle who changes into other polygons.
Check out this Brainpop video about polygons!

Here's one of our favorite polygon songs!  Check it out!

Here's the Parallelogram song!  It's a catchy tune!

Also be sure to check out these posts from last year's class.
They posted more pictures and videos about polygons!

FUN FACT:
The word polygon actually come from the Greek words polu (meaning many) and gonia (meaning angle).

Go Green...Problems

Due to the problems that the district is having with e-mails getting caught out in cyberspace and not being delivered in a timely matter, the office is asking all staff to take a break from "going green" and start sending home hard copies to all students.

Therefore, starting today anything that the office or teachers would send out as an e-mail to parents (weekly newsletters, etc) we are going to send home as hard copies to ALL parents.

Two Quick Footnotes:
#1:  If you subscribe to the BLOG you'll still recieve emails because blogger uses a feed burner not associated with WCUSD5.

#2:  My newsbulletin is still available electronically via http://missliefer.weebly.com/newsbulletin.html

Geometry Practice

This week we used pattern blocks to sort geometric shapes into two categories...

we also used everyday items (straws and twist ties) to practice geometry
right angle

acute angle

obtuse angle
a square is defined as a rectangle with all sides equal in length

a rhombus--a parallelogram with all sides equal in length
(a square is a special type of rhombus)
