How Much Would I Weigh on the Moon?

The terms "mass" and "weight" are often interchangeable in our everyday lives, but to scientists they mean different things.

Mass is a measure of how much matter it contains
Weight is a measure of the pull of GRAVITY between you and the planet you are standing on.

In science class today (page 426) we explored this concept.

Check out this site:
http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/

*we weigh less on the moon, because the pull of gravity on the moon is 1/6 of Earth's gravity*

Multiplication Wrestling

Today we introduced a new game in math class called "Multiplication Wrestling"
We played three rounds....
1st round:     class against teacher
2nd round:    table team "1" vs table team "2"
3rd round:    Boys vs. Girls

Here's a picture of us working hard to calculate the largest number...
We had the cards 2,3,7,9....

93 x 72
Take (90 +3) x (70 +2)

92 x 73
Take (90 +2) x (70 +3)

Wrestle the numbers and see who won!

This game is in the Student Reference Book on page 253.
Remember you have a personal log-in and password for our Everyday Math website.
It has an electronic version of our textbook along with lots of terrific math games to play at school as well as at home.  Check it out...

Travel Log

We are starting a fun new project for second semester!
It will help us learn about many different places.

Today we filled out the initial letter.  (They are all stacked up on our table in the classroom ready to go!)

Tonight all you need to do is write the name and address of ONE person you know living out of our area (examples: Chicago, St. Louis, California, Florida, and so on) on ONE stamped envelope.

Please use the school's address as the return address....
Gardner Elementary
1 Ed Gardner Place
Waterloo, IL  62298

As soon as your child returns the envelope to me, I will mail it off! :)
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

Here' the first page of the Travel Log that we will be mailing to our friend/family!
