Division

To practice long division we made videos to "teach" how to divide.
Some of them turn out really terrific! Check them out! (It's a great way to review for tomorrow's test!)

A few random photos and thoughts...

I hope you all are enjoying the extended break!
Four snow days in a row!  I'm staying indoors where it is roasty toasty warm!

This morning I was cleaning my computer files and found a few pictures to share...

girls vs boys in Multiplication Wrestling

The girls calculating their answer
The boys busy calculating their answer
Humm... who is going to have the higher product?

math-a-thon

Thanks for participating in Math-a-Thon!
A Math-a-thon was conducted for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
St. Jude’s is located in Memphis, Tennessee.
It is a research hospital for children with catastrophic illnesses.

This year, we had 52 children complete their Math-a-thon booklets consisting of 250 problems.
The children were from fourth and fifth grade classrooms.
They had people pledge donations to St. Jude’s Hospital.
The students were able to raise $2292.50.

What caring and giving children we have at Gardner Elementary!

Math-a-Thon

Math-a-Thon for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is starting!
Please consider participating...get your permission slips in!
(We only have the printed funbook available - not the online funbook)

Here's the website that the video we watched on Friday talked about:

On this wesite, you can plan math games for fun.
There's also information about St. Jude, information for parents, and more!
Check it out!

The finished books and money collected are due Nov. 15

Rally for Bulldog Improvement (RBI)

A goal is something big that you want to accomplish.  It is something important to YOU.  It might be learning something new, stopping bad habits, or getting better at doing something that is hard for you to do.  A goal is something that is not always easy to reach, but it can be accomplished by making a plan and following steps to reach it.
Ice Cream treats on Friday to kick off RBI this schoolyear

This week the fourth and fifth graders at Gardner Elementary will set two goals for yourself.  One of the goals should be related to school.  The second goal can be another school related goal or a personal goal.  After they write their goals, we will think of steps they can take to reach each one.  Remember that BIG goals may take awhile to accomplish, and may take several steps.

Miss Liefer will keep a copy of the goals.  We will review them periodically and keep track of how we are doing.

To earn RBI, we compare grade point averages.  We will add up your total percentage points for each subject and divide by four since there are four subjects.  In other words, the formula to earn RBI is
First Quarter Grades:

Literacy_____ + Math_____ + S. S._____ + Science_____ =

Total Percentage Points- First Quarter:________

If you raise your total percentage points by 1 point each quarter, you will be rewarded!  (“A” students need to maintain their “A” average).
Let's all Rally for Bulldog Improvement!  Let's get an RBI!

Subtraction Algorithms (Methods)

The Everyday Math website has very helpful "Algorithm Animations" (aka videos teaching how to do the methods).

Even though the online textbook has excellent videos, we decided to make our own.
(It's more fun to hear our own voices!)

Plus we are really getting good at subtraction if we can teach you how to do it!

SO, PLEASE WATCH OUR LATEST LESSONS....

Perseverance

In the common core state standards, one of our math practice standards is "perseverance."
We had a "problem solving day" earlier this week to practice perseverance.

Even when a task may be hard and challenging, we are going to keep trying!

Pirates

September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day!

In math we practice our multiples (skip counting).
To make it more "fun" we often say the numbers in a creative way.
We like say them like a volcano, or with a British accent, or while doing an exercise.
Today we said our multiples 'pirates speak'.... saying "Aaarrrgh" after each number.

Give it a try...

3 "Aaarrrgh"
6 "Aaarrrgh"
9 "Aaarrrgh"
12 "Aaarrrgh"
15 "Aaarrrgh"
18 "Aaarrrgh"
21 "Aaarrrgh"
24 "Aaarrrgh"
27 "Aaarrrgh"
30 "Aaarrrgh"
33 "Aaarrrgh"
36 "Aaarrrgh"

and, of course, Tim and Moby have a BrainPop video about Pirates - it's the featured movie of the day :)
