Metric Measurements

To help me remember the metric measurements from biggest to smallest, I remember this little saying...

King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk
K in King= Kilometer (1,000 meters)
H in Henry= Hectometer (100 meters)--you won't study this in fourth grade
D in Died= Decameter (10 meters)--you won't study this in fourth grade
M in Monday= Meter (1 meter)
D in Drinking= Decimeter (0.1 meter)
C in Chocolate= Centimeter (0.01 meter)
M in Milk= Milimeter (0.001 meter)

to move from big to small (down the staircase) move the decimal point to the RIGHT
example:
4 meters = ? mm

Answer is 4,000 mm

to move from small to big (up the staircase) move the decimal point to the LEFT
800 cm = ? m

Answer is 8 m

Another strategy is to think about the problem in simpler terms and then look for a pattern.

I know that in 1 meter there is 1,000 mm.
So, in 2 m = 2,000 mm
And, in 3 m = 3,000 mm
Therefore, in 4 m there is 4,000 mm

There are other strategies to solve these problems. What did YOU do?
